You're Not Behind — You Just Feel Like You Are

A quiet garden path winding through greenery, symbolizing everyone's own pace and journey

But here's something worth sitting with: that feeling of being behind isn't actually information about your life. It's a feeling created by your own thinking in that moment — and like all feelings, it's not permanent, and it's not accurate just because it feels convincing.

Comparison creates a story that isn't true

When you compare your life to someone else's highlight reel — their grades, their friend group, their confidence, their plans — you're comparing your full, complicated reality to a tiny slice of theirs. That's not a fair comparison, and it was never going to feel good.

The pressure to be "on track" is mostly made up. There's no universal schedule everyone else is following that you somehow missed. Everyone's figuring it out at their own pace, even the people who look like they have it all together.

What "behind" actually feels like from the inside

The feeling of being behind almost always shows up as urgency and anxiety — a tight, rushed feeling like you need to catch up right now. But that urgency isn't wisdom. It's just a busy mind creating pressure that doesn't need to be there.

When your mind settles — even a little — that feeling of being behind tends to loosen too. Not because your circumstances changed, but because you're seeing things with less noise and less panic.

You get to trust your own pace

You don't need to have it figured out by any particular age or deadline. You're not behind — you're just where you are, and where you are is allowed to be enough for right now. The clarity about what's next tends to show up on its own, when you're not chasing it out of fear.

If this is something you're working through right now, this is exactly the space I create for teens and young adults through Teens & Young Adults Coaching.

About the Author

Wendy Rovers

There is nothing wrong with you. There is nothing to fix. For years I searched for happiness in strategies, techniques, willpower. They helped for a while. Nothing lasted. Then I saw something simple: my stress was never coming from my circumstances. It was coming from thought. When people see this clearly — really see it — something shifts. Not through more effort, but through insight. The noise settles. Thinking clears. Decisions get simpler. Relationships improve. People feel more ease in everyday life — and perform better, not by trying harder, but by getting out of their own way. I work with leaders, individuals, couples, and teams to create the conditions for that shift — so they can think clearly, feel more ease, and build a life and relationships that feel true to them.
