Slow down to speed up? I didn’t get it for a long time.

AHA'S AND ACTION:

Here are 2 thoughts, 2 inspirations, and 1 question for you to reflect on this week…

2 THOUGHTS FROM ME

1. When I first started learning this, it didn't make sense to me — "slow down to get more done"? That sounded like grab a hammock, be a hippie, live on the beach. But I've come to see that slowing down is useful. It's when I am most creative, I make fewer mistakes, get more done from and inspired place. And I don't mean meditating at the same time every day, though that's fine too if that's your thing. It's not about scheduling a practice. It's about actually living in that quieter, more present state — where you can see, right now, what to do next. It's fascinating and I really appreciate the power in slowing down.

2. The more I notice my thinking — worrying about the future, regretting something from the past — the more I can see it pulling me out of the present moment. And the busier and faster my mind gets, the less I accomplish in that moment. I've seen it for myself, over and over: slowing down isn't the opposite of getting things done. It's how things get done.

2 INSPIRATIONS FROM OTHER PEOPLE

1. "We are quick, but we don't hurry. We make fewer mistakes because we have the level of our intensity under control." by John Wooden, UCLA basketball coach, 10-time national champion

2. Behavioral economist Sendhil Mullainathan and psychologist Eldar Shafir published a study in Science showing that a preoccupied mind — one consumed by worry, whether about money, the future, or the past — measurably drains what they call "mental bandwidth." In their experiments, simply prompting people to think about a stressful hypothetical expense dropped their performance on cognitive tests by the equivalent of 10 to 12 IQ points. A busy mind doesn't just feel less effective. It measurably is.

1 QUESTION FOR YOU

1. Where is your mind hurrying right now — into tomorrow, or back into yesterday — and what might you see if you slowed down enough to be here, in the Now?
